What You Need to Know about the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100.
The Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 earbuds are comfortable in-ear earbuds made for runners and work out enthusiast who also love their music. Their design is lightweight, portable, and they fit easily into your pocket. Add their stable build, waterproofing, comfortable fit, affordable price and you get a pair of earbuds that are a fantastic option to use during your workout.
Sadly, the earbud model can have issues with its battery, and the sound quality is far from perfect. Audiophiles beware.
What’s in the Box with the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100?
The box housing the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 earbuds opens up like a clamshell, revealing the earbuds tucked neatly into a mold keeping them safely in place. Lifting the earbuds and molding out, beneath them you will find your typical instruction manuals, legal paperwork, and a short USB charging cable.
Noticeably absent, however, is a USB to wall plug. We aren’t quite sure why Plantronics decided to make the cable this short or failed to include the wall plug, but both are definite negatives.
Who is the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 for?
The Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 earbuds were designed with runners in mind. The simplistic design together with the intuitive controls lets runners put these on and forget about them. Weighing in at only 1 oz, you really can forget you are wearing them.
The built-in strap secures the earbuds behind your ear, while the rubber tips keep them secure in your ear. Since the ear tips are designed to not completely seal your ear, you still hear your surroundings through the earbuds. If you are running in a busy city or somewhere where you need to be aware of your surroundings, this feature is a great boon.
In case you get caught in the rain, the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 is IP57 certified. This means that they are splash proof and sweat proof. They will survive that sudden rain shower or accidental laundry cycle.
We found the controls on the earbuds to be extremely simple. Even though you need to press on the earbuds to active the various controls, they don’t press into your ear and cause discomfort even while running.
Watch the video below for the basic controls and Bluetooth setup.
What Materials were used to make the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100?
Staring at from the ear tips, these are made from soft rubber and are designed to sit just outside your ear canal. This allows for a comfortable fit while still letting you hear your surroundings.
The back of both earbuds has a clickable button. These buttons are your controls.
Finally, the headband is made of rubber and is fully flexible. It bends, twists, and molds to your head for maximum comfort. We might also add that it has a lovely feel and texture. As a finishing touch and extra precaution, the earbuds have a reflective coating. This helps increase visibility In the dark, giving you that extra bit of security if you choose to run at night.
How is the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100’s Battery?
Here is where things get dicey.
The Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 has a long battery life, being able to hold a charge of up to 7 hours. Even if you are a marathon runner, you will be able to enjoy your music during your entire run!
Unfortunately, the long battery life is just about the only good thing about the battery.
The first annoying feature is the battery charge indicator. There is none!
The only way you can check how much juice is remaining is via the downloadable phone app. It would be nice if Plantronics built a battery light into the earbuds.
More importantly, however, is that customers have reported charging issues. After a couple months of use, some people have found that they are unable to recharge the battery. Nothing seems to fix this issue either. Thankfully, Plantronics is fantastic about honoring their 1 year warranty. Should this issue arise for you, Plantronics will happily replace the defective earbuds when you send them in.
How does the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 Sound?
To be perfectly honest, the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 2100 sound…. well… average.
Thought the mid-range frequencies come through well, the earbuds have distinctive issues with the bass and the treble frequencies.
The bass tends to slink into the background, being hard to hear and missing the thump and rumble which bass lovers live for. Additionally, the treble frequencies tend to get muddied and mixed together. Things like snare drums and cymbal crashes are difficult to make out. Those with sensitive ears will notice a quiet annoying hiss when the earbuds are on.
That being said, you can still rock out to classics like Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” or Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls” as you run and thoroughly enjoy the music.
Regardless, if you are an audiophile, we recommend staying away from these and opting for another pair of earbuds like the Jaybird Tarah running earbuds. Alternately, if you have a few extra bucks lying around, it would be worthwhile to look at the Bose SoundSport Free truly wireless earbuds.
