5 Best Wireless Earbuds 2019

Small, light, comfortable; wireless earbuds are on the cutting edge of sound technology.

Since Bluetooth 5.0 came out, the audio quality of wireless headphones, speakers, and earbuds has improved to match the quality of their wired counterparts.

If you can drop the messy wire without losing out of audio quality, why not do it? It’s a no brainer!

With the latest technological advances, wireless earbuds can be divided into two categories, wireless and true wireless.

Wireless earbuds have chord which runs around the back of the neck for extra security.

In contrast, true wireless earbuds, as the name suggests, are completely wire free.

Both styles boast legendary audio performances, and it comes down to a matter of personal taste and preference when choosing between the two.

In hopes that we can help you understand more about the choices wireless earbuds exhibit, we present to you our top five wireless earbud picks.

Syncing and Video Issues

The Issue

Since this is a problem that most wireless earbuds exhibit, we will address it here.

When companies design wireless earbuds, they are looking to maximise portability, comfort, audio quality, and battery life.

They design their products while taking into account the most common usages of the earbuds.

Wireless earbuds are meant to be portable, used on this go, on the move, or while working out.

Each earpiece needs to be synced with the other, so they play at the same time.  However, since the earbuds are small, there isn’t much room to add in extra hardware.

Ultimately, this means that something needs to be sacrificed.

Why It Matters

People buy wireless earbuds and then decide to sit down and watch Youtube videos or movies with them.

They quickly discover that that audio will either, be annoyingly out of sync from the left to the right earpiece, or will lag behind the video.

Then, in a huff, they will go and complain about the audio lag.

Wireless earbuds are not designed to be used for watching videos. They are meant to be used on the go, in situations where the wireless aspect is most important.

Because of physical restrictions, wireless earbuds aren’t yet able to playback video without running into these issues.

If you want a wireless product for watching videos or gaming, we recommend you stay away from wireless earbuds, and opt to buy a pair of wireless headphones instead

Certainly the most talked about product on the market, the Bose SoundSport Free True Wireless earbuds  sit comfortably at the top of our list.

One might argue that Bose’s exclusive design is superior to other alternatives available.

Vibrant sound matched with luxurious comfort. These may be the best sounding earbuds you will ever listen to!

Without further ado, let’s take a peek at what these earbuds have to offer.

For a fast roundup of this review, click here.

Pros

The Bose SoundSport Free earbuds fall into the category of True Wireless earbuds. No wires, yaaay!

Bose has put quite a bit of thought into designing these world-class earbuds.

First, they made them dust and splash proof for use even in less than ideal weather conditions.

Next, Bose built in wingtips that not only position the earbud properly in your ear, but also maintain a snug secure fit in your ear.

Finally, Bose made sure that the earbuds don’t go into your ear canal. In ear canal earbuds are often uncomfortable. Thanks to the added eartips, the Bose SoundSport Free sit tight and sound amazing while eliminating this discomfort.

The sleek charging case that comes with the earbuds carries an extra 10 hours of battery life. This further extends the 5 hours of playback that the earbuds are already capable of producing.

Interestingly, the earbuds snap into place in the case, being held securely with magnets. Moreover, the Bose SoundSport Free uses NFC technology to allow for easy Bluetooth pairing with up to 7 devices.

As noted earlier, these may be the best sounding pair of earbuds you will ever own.

Bose opted for a very balanced sound profile. Music plays with clarity and fidelity, endowing it with a warm sparkle.

Though there is no bass boost, the bass is pleasant and blends well with the other frequencies.

Cons

The biggest downfall of the Bose SoundSport Free earbuds is that some models will have audio issues with the left earbud.

People have reported that after several months of use, the left earbud may start to cut out. Thankfully, this is covered by the warranty, and Bose will replace the unit or refund you should this issue come up.

Equally troubling is the fact that the earbuds may lag behind audio or be slightly out of sync when watching videos, movies or gaming. More on that here.

Finally, the earbuds look a bit bulky when in your ear. Depending on your head shape and size, they may look a bit funny on you.

  • Left earbud may have connection issues
  • Bulky in ear
  • Syncing issues with videos and movies

When it comes to wireless earbuds, it’s quite difficult to build in good noise cancelling.

With this in mind, we wanted to present you with an option that not only does noise cancelling well, but also provides quality sound and comfort.

The Plantronics BackBeat Go 410 stood out particularly from among the competition thus earning our number 2 slot.

Below, we will explore what makes these earbuds tick, and why we think they are worth listening to.

For a fast roundup of our review, click here.

Pros

To begin with, the Plantronics Backbeat Go 410 earbuds have a sleek minimalistic design. They let you listen to your podcast and music, without getting in your way or being overly distracting to those around you.

The wire hangs comfortably around the back of your neck, while minimizing the risk of having them snag on things or people around you.

If you ever need to take them off, you can touch the tips together and they will hold together via the built in magnets, making for a stylish necklace.

Furthermore, as soon as you connect the earbuds, they will turn off saving your battery.

The BackBeat Go earbuds are made to be sweatproof, so using them on your during your workout is perfectly fine.

Additionally, Plantronics packages a host of ear tips of varying sizes with the earbuds. To ensure a comfortable fit and optimal sound quality, it is vital to use the right size of ear tip. Plantronics gives you this ability.

Equally impressive is the 8 hour battery life these earbuds boast. They can even last you 10 hours if you opt to turn off the noise cancelling feature.

In terms of sound quality, these earbuds have a robust bass while effortlessly playing any mid range frequencies.

These sound crip, clear and vivid, providing the listener with an immersive sound experience.

Cons

Though fantastic in many ways, the Plantronics Backbeat Go 410 do have a handful of drawbacks.

Firstly, the noise cancelling is good, but not perfect. If you are used to using noise cancelling technology, you might notice a slight hiss when active noise cancelling is on.

Sadly, we also noticed that high frequencies aren’t very clear. They tended to get jumbled and lost among the rest of the sounds.

Another demerit is their lack of IP rating. These earbuds are not water or splash proof, so running in the rain with these would severely damage them.

Like most other wireless earbuds, they are not built for gaming or watching videos. More on that here.

Finally, we found the microphone’s placement to be a bit awkward. It tends to rub up against clothing, which can be annoying for anyone you are on call with.

  • Not made for gaming or watching videos

The Jabra Elite Active 65t true wireless earbuds are similar to the Bose SoundSport Free true wireless earbuds.

In some instances, such as fast charge time, the Jabra Elites actually beat out their Bose counterpart.

However, we placed these earbuds lower on our tier list for one reason. They don’t have wingtips built into the earpieces. This seemingly small feature actually leads to some annoying issues.

We will discuss this further in our cons section.

For a fast roundup of our review, click here.

Pros

The Jabra Elite Active 65t wireless earbuds belong to the true wireless earbud category. No wires, ever!

Even when charging these, you don’t necessarily need a wired connection. You see, the carrying case not only keeps your earbuds save and secure, but also doubles as a charging case.

For their small size, the 5 hour battery life that the earbuds boast is, needless to say, impressive. With the carrying case however, you can extend the listening time to a full 15 hours, as the case’s battery holds 2 full charges.

Additionally, the fast charge feature gives you an hour of playback for just 15 minutes of charge time!

Next let’s look at the actual design of the earbuds.

They come with extra ear tips of different sizes.

Music quality and comfort is highly dependent on how well these fit into your ear. Having options for ear tip sizes allows you to get that perfect fit, along with premium comfort and vivid sound.

Important:  Take the time to find the perfect ear tip and the prefect position in your ear as this will greatly affect your listening experience!

The Jabra Elite Active 65t earbuds are also IP 56 certified, meaning they are splash resistant and dust proof.

Jabra has also built in a unique 4 mic system into these earbuds, which results in exceptionally clear call quality.

Finally, when it comes to audio, these wireless earbuds perform on par with the Bose SoundSport Free earbuds.

Unlike the Bose earbuds, however, Jabra chose to focus in on the bass. The bass has a bold thump that’s sure to put a smile on any bass lover’s face.

The mid ranges sound full bodied, and have a distinct sparkle to them, though vocals do take a back seat to the bass.

The treble frequencies sound good. Notably, S and T sounds sound a bit sharp and over emphasized, but most people will hardly notice this.

Cons

As promised above, let’s address the wing tip issue.

Many people are looking for earbuds which they can use while working out. This means that they stay securely in your ear even with exaggerated head motions.

The Jabra Elite Active 65t earbuds rely on maintaining a snug fit inside your ear in order to stay in place. Depending on the structure of your ear, this may not be enough.

While they can still be great while working out, it’s also quite possible you will find these slipping out of your ear, and needing to frequently push them back in.

Another common problem with these earbuds is that the left earbud may cut out at times. We aren’t use if this is due to a design flaw or due to an issue with the Bluetooth, but it is quite annoying.

Lastly, if you want to use these for gaming or watching videos, you will find them quite lacking. Read more on this here.

Is The Jabra Elite Active 65t Right For You?

When Jabra designed the Elite Active, they seemingly were aiming to make a pair of casual use earbuds. They focused their design choices around long periods of listening; specifically, in environments like your commute or at your desk at work.

They achieved this, but sacrificed the some features which would make these wireless earbuds ideal for workouts. Not that they can’t be used for such, but there are better optimized wireless earbuds for working out.

We recommend these if you plan to use them around the office or while commuting. They are also a fantastic alternative to the more rounded sound of the Bose Soundsport Free wireless earbuds. If you are debating between these to, buy these if you want an emphasized bass.

PROS

  • Comfortable and includes extra ear tips
  • Dust proof and water resistant, IP 56 certified
  • 5 hour battery life, 15 hours with charging case
  • Clear call quality
  • 4 mic system
  • Full bodied bass and mid range
  • Bass has a nice thump

CONS

  • No wingtip to hold these in place
  • Left earbud may cut out
  • Not made for watching videos or gaming

Jaybird as a company that builds reliable earbuds for runners.

Since they focus in on such a narrow market, they expertly create their products for their customer base.

Managing to blend together style, comfort and vivid sound, they produced the Jaybird Tarah.

We have a lot to say about these earbuds, so make sure you read on!

If you just want a quite roundup of our review, click here.

Pros

The sleek and innovative design of the Jaybird Tarah will make sure it sits comfortably in your ear. These earphones were built for runners, striving to solve the problems most runners experience while running.

The sound quality is good, and these wireless earbuds are built to last.

If you are looking to go wireless on your daily run, we recommend the Jaybird Tarah wireless earbuds.

There are available for purchase on amazon through this link here.

The fact that Jaybird built this into the Jaybird Tarah is a very nice touch, since you can now effortlessly put these earbuds on.

Examining the earbuds themselves, they come with removable ear tips, which have built in ear wings.  We love this feature on earbuds as they really help with stability and keeping the earbud in your ear while doing vigorous activities.

Additionally, the ear tips fit snugly in your ear. The snug fit gives these earbuds excellent passive noise isolation. Even if you are jogging in a busy city, you will hear less of the city and more of your music.

Since the Jaybird Tarah earbuds are IPx7 rated, you can submerge them in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes without sustaining any damage to them.

When fully charged, the battery will last you 6 full hours. Notably, a fast charge feature is incorporated into the battery. It only takes 10 minutes of charging to give you a full hour of playback.

While the audio quality of the Jaybird Tarah isn’t stellar, it still has bright spots and we found them pleasant to listen to.

The earbuds have a marvelous bass sound, adding in a little thump for extra punch. Though audiophiles may notice a bit of muddling among the high bass frequencies, the average consumer won’t.

In fact, if you listen to bass focused music, you will love how the Jaybird Tarah earbuds sound.

Similarly, the mid-range frequencies are smooth and balanced. Thought they tend to take a back seat to the bass; they blend surprisingly well into the rest of the audio profile.

Cons

Though this didn’t happen to us, the battery of the Jaybird Tarah can cause issues. Some customers have reported that after some time, typically 2-3 months, the battery dies and is unchargable.

This certainly is the most glaring flaw that these wireless earbuds have. Should this happen to you, you will be happy to know that Jaybird honors their warranty and does replace your earbuds.

Due to in ear nature these earbuds, they have a narrow soundstage. To simulate a soundstage, earbuds and earphones need to make use of the outer ear. However, this model goes directly into the inner ear, bypassing any interaction with the outer ear.

Thus, listeners will find that the soundstage is narrow.

Also important to note is that during running, the chord will rub up on the back of your shirt. A bit of the rubbing noise can transfer to your earbuds.

Finally, if you intend to use these earbuds to watch videos or games, you will be disappointed with sound quality. More on this here.

As is usual for our top 5 lists, we like to save our fifth slot for a budget recommendation.

For the purpose of this review, we were looking from a product that has good audio quality, maintains a comfortable fit, doesn’t have any massive issues, and yet doesn’t break the bank.

From the plethora of options, we believe that the Optima NuForce BE Sports4 earbuds are the best fit.

Interestingly, www.techradar.com puts these as their number one option. We respectfully disagree as we believe that there are better options available the market. We will link to their full review here.

For a quick roundup of our review, click here.

Pros

Optima has a green mission statement and strives to be environmentally responsible throughout their entire manufacturing process. They strive to reduce harmful emissions by efficient transportation, encouraging recycling, creating eco friendly designs, and minimizing wasteful packaging.

It if nice to so see and support a company which strives to do its part to keep the planet green.

An important factor with earbuds is how they fit in your ear. A snug tight fit typically leads to better audio quality and comfort.

Realizing the importance of this, the Optima NuForce BE Sports4 comes with a plethora of additional ear tips.  This forward thinking on Optima’s part ensures that you will have the best sounding and most comfortable experience possible with these wireless earbuds.

Additionally, the ear tips have built in ear wings, giving them extra support and stability in your ear. We love when companies build ear wings into their product design as it makes earbuds that much more portable.

The battery life is exceptional, lasting up to a full 10 hours on a single charge. Furthermore, the fast charge option lets you get 2 hours of playback by charging these wireless earbuds for just 15 minutes.

We should also add that they are IPx5 certified, meaning they can withstand strong jets of water. This makes the earbuds sweat resistant and gives freedom to use them even in adverse weather conditions.

The built-in magnets let you take the earbuds off and wear them as a necklace. This way, they don’t get lost or damaged if you decide to take a break from your music or just need to take them out to talk with someone.

As is typical with in ear models such as the Optima NuForce BE Sports4 earbuds, these have amazing sound isolation.

As far as audio is concerned, these wireless earbuds focus on bass. This design choice helps down the sound of footsteps while running.

Finally, the mid rangers are bold and clear, providing a very pleasant listening experience.

Cons

By far the most obnoxious issue these earbuds have has to do with the low battery notification. When the battery gets below 20%, the Optima NuForce BE Sports4 earbuds emit a sharp and shrill full volume beep. Some users have even described it as painful.

We recommend that you keep these earbuds charged whenever possible to avoid this issue.

Besides the above-mentioned issue, we found that we didn’t like how these earbuds sounded when only using one earbud. They really loose much of their sound quality and fullness if you try using only one.

The treble ranges are muddy and unclear. Notably, instruments like violas and flutes were hard to listen to. If classical music is your go to genre, these wireless earbuds will likely disappoint you.

Finally, as is typical with wireless earbuds in general, these don’t do well with movies and games. Read more on this issue here.

Is The Optoma NuForce BE Sport4 Right For You?

The sound profile on the Optima NuForce BE Sports4 earbuds can’t compare to the likes of the Bose SoundSport Free wireless earbuds. Nevertheless, they still sound great and are comfortable and make for easy listening.

We recommend these If you are on a budget yes want a good pair or wireless earbuds. Alternately, if you want to support a company that is striving hard to be environmentally responsible, these wireless earbuds are a fantastic choice.

The Optima NuForce BE Sports4 earbuds are available for purchase on Amazon through this link.

We would be remiss not to mention the Apple Airpods.

These earbuds started the wireless revolution, and to this day are the best selling wireless earbuds on Amazon.

They didn’t make it onto our list as many other products now exceed them in features and value.

However, if you want something simple with a world class brand name backing, the Apple Airpods are a solid buy.
