5 Best Noise Cancelling Headphones For Under $150

For this review, we are focusing in on price point.

This is the first and biggest consideration we take into account when deciding what to recommend. We stuck to cheap noise cancelling headphones, shying away from any premium headphones or any that exceeded a price of $150 USD.

Next, we take into account the noise cancelling capabilities of the headphones.  To give us a more even standard by which to judge, all the headphones considered were the over ear variety.

Each headphones has good passive noise cancelling due to the nature of the ear-cups.

Many cheap noise cancelling headphones run into issues with a decrease in sounds quality when Active Noise Cancellation is turned on. We made sure to pay special attention to this common flaw, and weeded out any choices where this was prominent.

Finally, we focused on audio quality. Each recommendation we have sound good. Some focus on a balanced sound profile, while other choose to push the bass of the mid ranges forward.

We make sure to talk about this in each review so you can decide which pair of cheap noise cancelling headphones fits your music tastes.

We recommended the Anker Soundcore Space NC in our Best Noise Cancelling Headphones article.

The sound quality, build, feel, and price are all phenomenal!  Thought it actually doesn’t out perform the Plantronics BackBeat PRO 2 when it comes to sound quality, it is considerably cheaper.

Since price if the primary consideration we took into account, the Anker Soundcore Space NC beat out the rest of the competition to take the first slot as our pick.

The find out all the details on why we love these noise canceling headphones, keep reading.

Alternately, if you just want a quick summary, click here.

Pros

The Anker Soundcore Space NC outperforms any other budget noise cancelling headphones on the market. Though a bit heavy, weighing in at 9.3 oz, this only serves to add to their sturdy look and feel.

The ear-cup has integrated touch sensitive controls. All it takes to adjust your volume or skip between your songs is a gentle swipe on your ear-cup.

Anker didn’t skimp on battery life either. These headphones boast 20 hours of wireless replay time with active noise cancellation on, and achieve an impressive 50 hours in wired mode.

As far as sound quality goes, these headphones have a clear crisp sound though all frequency ranges, though they lack a touch of fullness.

Our favorite thing about the Anker Soundcore Space NC we saved for last. Unlike many similar models in the same price range, the audio quality actually improves when you turn on active noise cancellation.

In similar models you often find that when turning on active noise cancellation, the bass will lose it punch. Anker has managed to not only avoid this drop-off, but even boost the bass output when in this mode

Cons

We have found that he earcup design is a bit strange. The padding isn’t quite big enough to be considered around ear, yet not quite small enough to be on ear either. If you do get a pair of these, whether they fit on or around your ears till depend greatly on how big your ears actually are.

This design choice also serves to contribute to another problem these noise cancelling earphones have, which is breathability. Because of the materials used, they earphones do easily let air in. If you are in a hot environment, you may find a bit of sweat accumulating around your ears while using these.

Finally, these speakers are not bass heavy. Listeners will notice that thought the bass is clear, it is missing a bit of that extra punch. This is especially so when compared to the active noise cancellation mode where the bass gets a significant boost.

Is The Anker Soundcore Space NC Right For You?

These noise cancelling headphones are solidly built and well designed. The middle, treble and high  frequencies stand stand out, so if your music isn’t too bass heavy, you should really enjoy how these sound.

The active noise cancellation filter our much of the surrounding sounds, taking the edge off that loud commute or making it easier to focus in on your studies.

Sturdy, sleek, and delivering on all they promise, these headphones will keep you happy with your music for many years to come.

PROS

  • Amazing value for budget headphones
  • Sturdy build
  • Clear and ballanced sound through all ranges
  • 20 hours of wireless replay time
  • Sound quality improves when using Active Noise Cancellation

CONS

  • Low breathability
  • Top padding isn't most comfortable with long use
  • Lacking a bit in the bass frequencies

2) Plantronics BackBeat PRO 2 - Best Quality

The Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2s are the best sounding, most comfortable pair of noise cancelling headphones we considered for this list.

However, with the quality bump comes a bump in price. They barely made it into our list of cheap noise cancelling headphones, just squeaking in under our $150 limit.

That being said, if you afford to spend the extra cash, they are well worth the purchase.

Bellow we showcase  why these deserve the number 2 slot on this list.

If you want a quick summary of this review, click here.

Pros

The Plantroncis BackBeat Pro 2 comes in a well built carrying pouch. Easily stored for transportation, the pouch adds a layer of protection to these headphones.

They weigh in at 7.7 oz, coming in as the lightest pair of cheap noise cancelling headphones on our list.

Plantronics added in extra padding to the ear cups and up along the headband. You will find that the top of the headband is made of a soft leather, while the underside is a comfortable cloth material.

Because of these physical features, these are easy and comfortable to wear all day long.

This model includes a built in battery. It has a battery life of 24 hours. As a result, you can count on your noise cancelling headphones to play your music even if you accidentally forget to charge them.

Additionally, the powerful battery is used to juice the built in Bluetooth.  You can easily go wireless with the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2s, for those times when you don’t want to deal with chords getting in your way.

Finally, the sound.

Plantronics decided to emphasize the mid and high range frequencies. As a result they are crystal clear, and best suited for listeners who enjoy music with heavy vocals or instruments.

The bass is still excellent, coming through crisp and clear. Any Bass lovers will find they have a nice deep rumble, but are lacking a bit of kick for the high-bass instruments.

Cons

Even thought these these noise cancelling headphones are very light, they are not foldable. Hence, they are bulky and will take up quite a bit of space when taken on the go.

Its also worth mentioning that there were not built for vigorous activities. Doing thing like jogging, running, or exercising will make these feel cumbersome on your head.

Additionally, you run the risk of the risk of letting these slip of your head, falling, and being potentially damaged.

We found the active noise cancelling feature to be sufficient, but not anything particularly outstanding.

Finally, the noise leakage was rather noticeable. If you enjoy blasting your music, you may find people giving you dirty looks.

Is The Plantronics BackBeat PRO 2 Right For You?

In terms of audio quality, the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 are the best on this list. They are pleasant to listen to no matter what kind of music you like.

Beware if you care about most about portability or noise cancellation. The Anker Soundcore Space NC do these things better.

  • Comes with a carrying pouch
  • Sturdy design
  • Comfortable ear cups
  • Well padded headband
  • Wireless
  • 24 hour battery
  • Amazing sound
  • Lift eacup to pause music
  • Active noise canceling doesn't negatively impact music

CONS

  • Bit bulky and eacups aren't foldable

The Cowin E7 sits at the top of Amazons over ear headphones category. People love these headphones and so do we!

With the $150 budget limit, you will be able to pick up a 2 pairs of these cheap noise cancelling headphones, in two different colours, and still still money left over!

Our personal favourite is the blue chrome pair.

Let’s a close listen and see why people absolutely love the Cowin E7s.

For a quick summary of our review, click here.

Pros

Right off the bat, Cowin impresses by providing an amazing leather travelling case to store your new headphones.

However, you won’t want to keep these stored for long, as they just feel so very comfortable.

Adding on to this is the battery life. A single charge can get you up to 30 hours of playback.

Even when you do drain your battery completely, the fast charge feature will have you up and running with an hour of music in just 10 minutes.

The Cowin E7 noise cancelling headphones have a bold flashy design which screams to be noticed.

They have built in Bluetooth, and are NFC enabled.  There cannot be an easier way to connect to your  devices as all it takes is a single tap.

Lastly, we need to listen to the audio.

The bass on these is quite prominent, having a strong boom to it.

The mid and high frequencies sound good. Though you may find that  vocals become a touch muddy at higher volumes, this won’t hinder your listening experience.

The built in active noise cancellation works well. Though not drowning out all sounds, it does a sufficiently good job of dampening unwanted noise.

Cons

The design of the Cowin E7 noise cancelling headphones is meant to stand out. However, this makes them a bit bulky, and also slightly heavier than the other headphones on this list.

They weigh in at a solid 9.6 oz.

The ear cups on these cheap noise cancelling headphones do turn, but don’t include a folding feature. As a result they aren’t the most transportation friendly when not being worn.

We found that the buttons are very tactile. Whenever you press one, they give off a fairly loud click. This can cause some minor interruptions in audio quality, and perhaps disturb those around you.

Finally, when used above 75% volume, there is noticeable sound leakage.

Is The COWIN E7 Right For You?

The Cowin E7 noise cancelling headphones are fantastic for their price. If you love making a statement or are buying for a music lover who likes to stand apart from the crowd, these will most certainly help.

The choice from a host of different colours gives a nice personal feel to these headphones.

If you love bass, we highly recommend these. However, if you listen to more acoustic of vocal centered music, the Anker Soundcore Space NC or the Monoprice 110010 maybe be a better fit for you.

PROS

  • Leather travelling case
  • Built for comfort
  • 30 hour battery life
  • Fast charge, 10 minutes for 1 hour playback
  • Wireless
  • NFC enabled
  • Strong bass
  • Active Noise Cancelling works well

CONS

  • A bit heavy and bulky
  • Ear cups only twist but don't fold
  • Buttons give very audible click when pressed
  • Noticeable sound leakage at high volume

Cowin as a company does a fantastic job of building cheap noise cancelling headphones.

The COWIN SE7 is another example of their ingenuity. This pair of headphones was built with two things in mind, comfort and portability.

Boasting a bold yet sleek design, these earphones are perfect for long periods of wear.

At their price point, they fit well as our number 4 pick.

For a quick summary of our review, click here.

Pros

Before we even got to the earphones themselves, we found ourselves impressed by the carrying case COWIN SE7 came inside.

Made from a nice pleather material, the case is sturdy, has plenty of internal storage space, and looks great!

Since the COWIN SE7 headphones have foldable ear cups, they fit well within the case without being bulky.

Taking a closer look at the build itself, we find the ear cups are plush and comfortable. Similarly, the headband is also well padded, promising comfort even with long periods of use.

The COWIN SE7 are wireless Bluetooth headphones, having the latest Bluetooth 5.0 built in. While they do come with a charging cable and AUX wire, the wireless capability is great from travel.

Furthermore, the headphones boast a battery life of up 30 hours. This way, you will always be able to listen to your music, podcasts, etc even if you forget to charge them occasionally.

Finally, looking at the the audio profile, we find that the bass is predominant. People who enjoy deep resonating bass will love the sound of these headphones.

Cons

While the bass on the COWIN SE7 is fantastic, the other frequency ranges aren’t so great.

We noticed that various instruments don’t sound very distinct from one another, giving the headphones a somewhat cluttered sound profile.

Additionally, the noise cancelling can’t compare to some of the other headphones on this list.

They block out a decent amount of sound, but if this is the main feature you care about, we recommend looking at another pair of headphones.

Finally, you can’t change your earphones and listen to music simultaneously.

Is The COWIN SE7 Right For You?

The COWIN SE7s are well designed, comfortable, portable, and fulfill their intended purpose. They are great if you are looking to take a pair of headphones with you on the go or wear them for long periods of time.

They do end up sacrificing a bit of audio quality, and the Active Noise Cancelling is outperformed by other headphones on this list.

PROS

  • Sturdy pleather carrying case
  • Wireless
  • 30 hour battery life
  • Folding earcups
  • Plenty of padding
  • Bass is strong

CONS

  • Cluttered sound profile
  • Active noise cancelling is sub par
  • Can't charge and listen to music simultaneously

We thought Monoprice 110010 was a very interesting pair of headphones.

It belongs to older generations of noise noise cancelling headphones. Thus, it is missing many features of the newer models.

However, it still made it to number 5 on our list because of its outstanding audio quality and price. Honestly, we feel that the sound quality rivals even the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 headphones!

For a quick summary of this review, click here.

Pros

The Monoprice 110010 noise cancelling headphones are well built.

Comfortable materials were used to design the ear cups, and they isolate incoming noise well.

The built in controls are simple, and easy to use even right out of the box.

Though you need an AAA battery to power these headphones, they are very power efficient and allow for 52 hours of play time from a single one.

Now the area where these truly shine.

The noise cancelling for the Monoprice 110010 works well. There is a clear reduction in unwanted sounds, and the effect on sound quality is minimal.

Besides this, we really need to compliment these headphones on their audio quality.

Starting with the bass, we found it to be crisp, clear and robust. It is strong enough to bring out that beloved boom, yet subtle enough to balance well with other frequencies.

The middle and high frequencies are crisp and clear. We didn’t find any distortion in any sound ranges.

Overall, these Monoprice 110010 have a very well rounded sound, that is easy to listen to no matter what your musical tastes are.

Cons

The Monoprice 110010 are not fancy noise cancelling headphones.

They are meant to do their job and do it well, but sacrifice many of the extras that come with noise cancelling headphones.

Some things that are missing for instance are, an application to adjust sound to your tastes, and Bluetooth compatibility.

Additionally, there is no built in rechargeable battery. You will need to keep AAA batteries on hand to keep these headphones powered.

Construction wise, the headband can feel a bit flimsy.

Finally, if there is a grip about sound quality if would be about the soundstage.

It isn’t always clear where exactly the music is coming from. Thus, these headphones won’t take full advantage of some of the high quality music formats.

Is The Monoprice 110010 Right For You?

If you want noise cancelling headphones that just work, these are for you.

Sure they don’t have all the fancy bells and whistles of other noise cancelling headphones, but the Monoprice 110010 headphones sound amazing!

For a reliable pair of headphones, with great sounds sound, pick up a pair of these.

If you want all the extras along with the best sound, take a look at the Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 headphones.

PROS

  • Comfortable swiveling ear cups
  • Controls are streamlined and simple
  • 52 hours from a single battery
  • Strong vibrant bass
  • Clear mids and high frequencies
  • Pleasant well rounded sound

CONS

  • Bad soundstage
  • Doesn't come with an app
  • Headband feel a bit flimsy
  • No Bluetooth
  • Uses AAA batteries

Conclusion

Good interruption free sound doesn’t need to be expensive.  You most certainly can buy a pair of cheap noise cancelling headphones even on a budget.

Everyone deserves good sound, so why not treat yourself to one of our recommendations?

We hope that we were able to help you make a more informed purchase decision.
